Johnny Football to Johnny Heisman

Defenders around the country endure yet another slap in the face after watching Johnny Manziel win the Heisman. While you can look at his stats and tell me that he is a freshman who beat Alabama, he didn’t deserve it. The only reason Johnny Football was a finalist was because of the impressive win over Alabama. Honestly, how many of us really followed or even knew who Manziel was prior to that game? Johnny Manziel

On the other hand, you have to give him his due diligence, running for 19 touchdowns and near 70% completion rate is very impressive. However, I still firmly believe that Manti T’eo deserved to win the Heisman. It truly shows that the Heisman is really just a vote for the best quarterback or running back that season.

In the last 50 years, quarterbacks and running backs have combined to win the Heisman 46 times. The remaining four belonging to three wide receivers and one cornerback. T’eo was the anchor of the number two ranked defense in the country, accumulating remarkable statistics. Not to mention the fact that he kept his play at an extremely high level after losing his grandmother to leukemia and girlfriend in a car crash within weeks of each other.

I respect what Johnny Manziel did this year as true freshman starting quarterback for a big time school in the best football conference in the country. I think he will end up being a phenomenal player, however, the Johnny Football media hysteria is truly what pushed him to the top.
